    Why musicians need specialty insurance

Instruments and audio equipment travel to gigs, sit in vans and get handled by stage crews – exactly the situations standard homeowners and renters policies handle poorly. Many personal policies exclude property used for business, cap coverage off premises, or pay only the depreciated value. Specialty musician insurance, usually written as an inland marine policy, covers gear anywhere it goes against theft, accidental damage, fire and transit loss.

    Typical costs

    Gear valueHobbySemi-proTouring pro
    $5,000$100 – $150$100 – $150$100 – $150
    $15,000$100 – $150$150 – $250$230 – $330
    $50,000$350 – $500$550 – $750$800 – $1,100

Most insurers charge a minimum premium of about $100 – $150 a year, and roughly $0.75 – $2 per $100 of value above that.

What to look for in a policy

    Keeping claims simple

Record serial numbers, take photos, save receipts and appraisals, and update the schedule whenever you buy or sell gear. Report theft to police promptly and keep the report number.

    Frequently asked questions

Usually about $100 – $150 minimum per year, then roughly 1 – 2 % of the gear's value depending on use and deductible.

    About GearCover

GearCover is an independent, free educational calculator for musicians, DJs, studios and collectors. Premiums are rough estimates based on typical market rates; actual quotes depend on the insurer, state, claims history and underwriting. This is not an insurance quote or advice. We are not an insurance agency and are not affiliated with any insurer.

Every formula on this page runs entirely in your web browser. The numbers you type are never uploaded, stored or shared. Our goal is simple: give you an honest starting point so you can compare product specifications with confidence and avoid paying for capacity you do not need – or buying something too small to do the job.

The methodology combines widely published engineering rules of thumb, manufacturer data sheets and the electrical code practices that installers use every day. We review the assumptions regularly and update the calculator when typical product specifications change.
